Follow on Google News | Grantham Flood Families Set To Be Gold Coast Heartwave Beach Walk VIPsA busload of families from Lockyer Valley’s flood stricken Grantham region are set to take part in this weekend’s giant heart formation at the Heartwave Beach Walk 2011
By: Soul Arch Media & Marketing Heartwave event organiser Heidi Bartholomew was excited about the prospect of giving families from one of QLD’s most hard hit regions a welcome reprieve from the arduous task of rebuilding. “Thirty or so kids and their parents from the Lockyer Valley’s Grantham ground zero area have accepted the invitation to join us on the morning of the Heartwave Beach Walk. We’ve been given the use of the Kellogg’s Bus to pick them up at 6.30am, and we're planning to give them a great day and a total break from what they are experiencing. Currumbin SLSC is providing food and drinks, our friends at Billabong and Havaianas will give them gift bags with some new clothing, footwear and other treats, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary will be shouting them to a fun afternoon in the theme park, and of course most importantly the entire community who’ll be attending Heartwave will be there to give them a hug and smile.” The Grantham families will join Queensland icons like iron man Zane Holmes, former world champion surfers Mark Occhilupo and Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew, and iron woman Hayley Bateup who are also getting behind Heartwave, and organisers of the day are expecting around 500 Queenslanders to attend. The Heartwave Beach Walk will depart from Currumbin at 9am for Tugun before returning to Currumbin beach where a giant heart formation will be created to send a strong visual message of love and support to those affected by the catastrophic Queensland floods and cyclone Yasi. As the Heartwave Beach Walk’s main aim is to show those affected by QLD’s recent string of natural disasters support, the fact that one of the most flood devastated regions in QLD is less than two hours drive from the unaffected Gold Coast coastline was not lost on organizers, who have been busy arranging transportation and an array of goodies for their Grantham guests. “When event supporters Kellogg’s offered Heartwave the use of the bus, we extended the invitation to Grantham residents through community workers who were best placed to identify those who could really use a day away from it all. The overwhelming message seemed to be that so many people there just need a break. So the bus filled up quickly, and those participating are extremely excited to come down and take part,” said Bartholomew. Iron man Zane Holmes agrees the event will also give hundreds of people attending an outlet to show their wholehearted support for Queenslanders doing it tough. "The HEARTWAVE BEACH WALK 2011 is a great opportunity to support the flood victims and your community. I’m throwing my support behind it and I encourage everyone to do the same," Holmes said. To take part, attendees simply register from 7.30am on the morning of the event and pay a donation of $10 for adults or a gold coin for each child, with all proceeds from the event going to the QLD Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal 2011. Upon registration all attendees will receive a wristband, water and an energy bar to sustain them for the morning’s walk from Currumbin to nearby Tugun. On return to Currumbin, attendees will be encouraged to take part in the gigantic heart-shaped formation on the beach. The event is open to all ages. Parking is available to the public at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary car park, Tomewin Street, Currumbin.
