By: Steve Dixon Ruthless Films partners with Reform Immigration for America for national House Party events featuring Tony & Janina's American Wedding – important screenings in Georgia for International Women’s Day. Following recent well-received screenings at DePaul University, Wake Forest University and Francis Parker School, and a nationally syndicated interview on Sirius / NPR Bob Edwards Show, Director Ruth Leitman is partnering with Reform Immigration for America (RI4A) to screen a 17 minute version of her award winning immigration documentary Tony & Janina's American Wedding in a series of national House Party events. Leitman will also bring the film to Georgia for a bipartisan screening at Georgia Public Television with the Georgia Women’s Caucus, and present the film at Atlanta’s The Plaza Theater on International Women’s Day. Monday February 21, 2011 marks the beginning of the new partnership between Ruthless Films and Reform Immigration for America, where Leitman’s powerful film will be the centerpiece of a national RI4A campaign to increase support for comprehensive immigration reform. Rolling out communication to their national database of over 250,000 members, RI4A and Ruthless Films efforts will both increase awareness of the need for compassionate immigration reform, as well as raising the profile of this important documentary film at a time where there is much debate on the issue of comprehensive immigration, border enforcement, and safe communities legislation across America. Leitman will also be bringing the film to Atlanta, Georgia for two special screenings in early March. On Monday March 7th, Leitman will present the film to a bipartisan gathering of the Georgia Women’s Caucus in a unique screening setting at Georgia Public Television. Both director Leitman, and subject of the film Tony Wasilewski will be in attendance. Leitman and Georgia State Representative Margaret Kaiser (D-GA) organized the screening to draw attention to the effects of deportation on women as shown through the experience of Janina Wasilewski in the film. On Tues, March 8, 2011, Leitman, Wasilewski, Rep Kaiser and others will celebrate International Women’s Day with the Atlanta Premiere of Tony & Janina’s American Wedding at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta, GA. Again, the presentation of the film and a moderated Q&A session following the screening will focus on the experience of Janina Wasilewski as a voice for all women - Mothers, Wives and Sisters - in their fight to stop deportations and the tearing apart of over 400,000 families a year under current US immigration policy. Tony & Janina's American Wedding shows the devastating effect of deportation on a Suburban Chicago Polish American family, who after 18 years in America, find themselves caught in the tangled web of our immigration policy when wife and mother Janina Wasilewski is deported back to Poland (taking their then 6 year old son Brian with her). The film is both an excellent addition to the stellar group of documentary films Leitman has made (Tony & Janina's American Wedding is Leitman's 5th feature length documentary film - her previous films include 1998's award winning Alma, and 2006's theatrically released Lipstick and Dynamite), as well as being an unprecedented tool in the immigration debate. Tony & Janina's American Wedding premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival where it won the Chicago Filmmaker Jury prize and screened on Capitol Hill in December 2010 on the historic day the DREAM ACT vote passed in the House of Representatives, before its defeat in the Senate 10 days later. Garnering support from the most influential immigration organizations, human rights organizations and faith based organizations, and politicians on both sides of the aisle, Tony & Janina's American Wedding offers a fresh perspective on the immigration conversation, and tells the untold human rights story of Post- 9/11 America, that every undocumented immigrant in our country faces today, with the power to open the conversation for change.
