Feb. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- New York, N.Y. – Avenue Pink partners with the New York Urban League’s Young Professionals (NYULYP) and New York University’s (NYU) Wagner Black Student Alliance to host the “State of Young Black New York: Exploring Multiple Dimensions of Black Identity” (SOYBNY), full day of conversations about contemporary notions of Black identity,  at the NYU Kimmel Center (9th floor) on Saturday, February 26, from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

This discussion, contextually held in the wake of Black History Month, was inspired by a spike of recent conversations addressing ideas of post-racial identity, professional, political and gender identity in a ‘post-Obama society.’ The perceptions and ideas shared are thought to be a vital step in understanding and advancing the collective understanding of the Black Diaspora defined, particularly as it relates to identity, among young Black New Yorkers.

“The State of Young Black New York is the young professionals of New York City's opportunity to craft, shape and mold what that vision is for ourselves, our lives and our legacy,” says NYULYP President, Rahshib Thomas. “This event is important to the community to signal the alliance of like-minded individuals who, even at a younger age, are focused on a better tomorrow and recognize there is more work that needs to be done. So often many of us have dialogues amongst our own circles, but do not reach across the aisle even when across the aisle is within our own community. We're hoping to attract the socially conscious, civically engaged young professional leaders who add value to any discussion such and are poised to act from that day forward.”

Partners for this event include Yum! Brands; National Alliance of Market Developers – NY Chapter, National Association of Black Accountants - NY Chapter, The Brooklyn/Long Island graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and official media partners The Root.com, NV Magazine, and Avenue Pink.

State of Young Black America is a free event and is free and open to the public. A post event mixer will be held at Vyne Wine Bar, 82 West 3rd Street New York, NY beginning at 5pm.
