Feb. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Two common sources of unpleasant odors in buildings include off-gassing from mold and improperly vented sewer gases.  Both problems can be rectified, but only after the source is identified.

Mold in indoor environments can create odors that can be confused for sewer gas.  Fungi can emit a musty, or earthy smell, in properties with elevated microbial growth.  If odors from mold are found in buildings, occupants are almost certainly being exposed to mold spores that can cause allergenic, pathogenic and/or toxigenic reactions.

Sewer gas is primarily composed of methane.  It can also include a host of other gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.  Sewer gases cause not only unpleasant odors, but can also be dangerous to occupant’s health.  In extreme situations it can even be a fire hazard.

Properly installed plumbing traps and vents in buildings are designed to prevent sewer gas from entering structures.  These can malfunction.  Buildings with HVAC systems that bring outdoor air into the structure, when placed too close to a sewer vent, can also pull escaping sewer gas back into a building.

Employee complaints are often the initial cause of odor investigations.  In the Chicago area and across Illinois, one of the firms that has built a reputation for resolving these types of problems is EC2, Inc.  “These odors may be causing health concerns or lost productivity for the building’s occupants,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2.   “If not properly handled by management these same odor concerns can sometimes turn into formal worker complaints and even costly lawsuits,” he continued.

The IAQ and building science investigators at EC2 have successfully conducted over 5000 indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations, many involving problematic odors.  The company has decades of experience investigating and resolving what can often turn into a complex analyses of a building’s ventilation, air pollution controls and other environmental issues.
