Potential Vehicle Donation Donors Urged to Read the CA Attorney General's Report on Fundraisers

March 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Warren, RI,—The office of the California Attorney General has released the 2009 fiscal year report of charitable solicitation by commercial fundraisers. The State findings report that less than 60% of the money raised by commercial fundraisers in California was actually returned to the charitable organizations; the rest of the funds went to dozens of companies that manage the car donation programs. Donors need to be aware of the increasing problem of charitable contributions from vehicle donation programs not reaching their intended charitable purpose. It is up to each individual donor to check out a charity for him or herself.

According to the California Nonprofit Integrity Act, commercial fundraisers in California, must have written contracts with the charitable organizations for whom they are working and the contract must spell out how the fee will be collected. This law does not limit how much the fundraiser can keep.
