Follow on Google News | Fax to Email is the Green, Eco Friendly AlternativeThe fax to email feature for 0800, 0844 and 0845 numbers can save your business money and resources and help you to be more environmentally friendly.
By: David Clarke of DBS Telecoms Not being very eco-friendly can leave you open to some very negative publicity from rivals and environmental campaigners. Business Schools now include modules in environmental issues as part of their courses, reflecting its importance in today’s workplace. Not only does being green benefit the planet and its natural resources, but it is more often than not of huge benefit to the company. Being green can lead to a company being much more efficient, making savings in energy usage and therefore cost, reducing overheads, improving productivity, and often without much effort or cost needed to execute these improvements. Even small changes can make a big difference. One way which companies can make a difference is the fax to email feature for 0800, 0844 and 0845 telephone numbers. Speaking about his past experience, David Clarke, Director of DBS Telecoms and an 0800 numbers specialist said: “I'm not proud of it, but the sales office I used to work in many years ago used to have a rather peculiar method of ascertaining the business potential of its prospect list, which was if they didn’t have a fax machine we didn't want to talk to them. However, things have now changed drastically. It's very hard for me to work out why anyone would use their company's hard earned profits to invest in a fax machine.” Fax machines are unfriendly to both the environment and to the company using them. Firstly, they need to be left switched on all the time which uses up power. Secondly, they can use up vast quantities of paper with messages that are printed out and, for the most part, read once and then thrown away. Many businesses are now realising that there more environmentally friendly way of handling faxes. Companies are now able to use non-geographic numbers and point them directly to an email address. Non-geographic numbers include 0800, 0844 and 0845 numbers, as opposed to geographic numbers which "belong" somewhere and can be identified by their prefix or area code. DBS Director David Clarke says: “If you use a non-geographic number pointed at your email address it means all faxes are delivered to your PC screen rather than your fax machine. The immediate green advantage is that faxes don't have to be printed out because they can be viewed on your monitor. This saves paper and protects the environment. You can still choose to print out your faxes out if you want to, but every time you hit the delete button you have saved one sheet of paper, and that is going to make a huge difference to your organisation's paper wastage over the course of a year. It's going to save a lot of trees too, as emails that are received using a fax to email service can easily be stored and later retrieved on your PC rather than being hole punched and filed away to gather dust on a shelf in your office.” The fax to email feature cannot be added to an existing 0800, 0844 or 0845 number that is used for voice. You would need to order another non-geographic number in this case.
