DAM999 - A tribute to the Banqiao Dam Disaster

March 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Dams have always been a major topic for controversies. They have satisfied only a minority group. Several environmentalists have stood against the construction of the dams but their protests have never been fruitful. This time Sohan Roy is coming up with his movie DAM 999 based on dam disaster. DAM999 produced by Biz TV Network and directed by Sohan Roy, is a tribute to the tragic Banqiao dam disaster in 1975 which took the lives of over 250,000 people. The plot of DAM 999 revolves around a hundred year old dam and populace living around it. The movie throws light on the consequences of the disaster caused by an outdated dam.  

The Banqiao Dam Disaster is considered as one of the biggest manmade disaster. The dam constructed in 1952, was designed to survive 300 mm of rainfall per day but in August 1975 the rain poured at 189.5 mm rainfall per hour and 1060 mm per day, exceeding the average annual precipitation of about 800 mm more than a year’s rainfall in 24hrs. The water at the Banqiao dam crested 117.94 level above sea level, which was 0.3 meter higher than wave protection wall on the dam resulting in failure of the dam. The Banqiao dam failure precipitated the failure of 62 dams in total which resulted in a massive catastrophe. According to the Hydrology Department of Henan Province, approximately 26,000 people died from flooding and another 145,000 died during subsequent epidemics and famine.

DAM999 is a movie with a social cause which portrays the jeopardy dams have caused across the globe, with a message to the masses to help prevent the most deadly disaster of the world.  It is estimated that 85% of all the large dams, numbering about 40,000 all over the world would have passed their projected life spans by 2020. Despite of been warned about the disaster caused by these dams, they are neither checked nor reconstructed. Torrential rains, floods, earthquakes and landslides are the ones that can break any dam, and global warming has of late increased the incidence of untimely rains and floods. The movie will shed light over the consequences of an unfortunate disaster which is predicted in the near future. The movie is a tribute to those who live under the terror of dam collapse.
