March 11, 2011 - PRLog -- There are selfless people in the world and Karen Kruschka, Virginia Realtor, is one of them.   She is a member of the West Springfield Rotary Club which supports a reading program for hearing impaired children.

Karen has been a volunteer at Camelot Elementary School in Annandale, Virginia since its inception six years ago. Camelot is one of several elementary schools in Fairfax County that has specially equipped classrooms for assisting the hearing impaired with their early learning skills.  Karen wrote about her participation in the Rotary project on ActiveRain.com where she is community blogger representing Prince William County in Virginia.

How do you read to hearing impaired children, you might ask?  Karen explains how she does it.  “I wear a microphone and my voice is transmitted by way of an electronic wireless loop in the classroom.  Most of the children have had cochlear implants and hear my voice with help from a device that was implanted in their ears.”  This program depends on having several different volunteers reading to the children.  Having a variety of voices helps the children identify different vocal inflections, tones and accents.

Karen notes that volunteers participate in the reading program an hour a day, three times a year.  She finds reading to the children gratifying and goes on to say, “My reward is the hugs and smiles I get when I am finished with my story and knowing I have contributed to a young person’s positive learning experience.”

Karen is a Realtor with RE/MAX Olympic Realty in Manassas, Virginia.  Her real estate team has 34 years experience and serves Woodbridge, Dumfries, Manassas, and Bristow in Prince William County.  She says, “Experience Isn’t Expensive – It’s PRICELESS.”
