March 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Indoor air quality problems can occur in almost any structure.  Just last month, a woman filed a lawsuit against the owners of an apartment complex in Collinsville, Illinois.  The suit claims that the defendants attempted to conceal sewage and mold that lead to the woman becoming ill after breathing the poor indoor air quality.

The typical home across Chicago and throughout Illinois is full of biological contaminants.  They can include bacteria, mold and mildew, viruses, animal dander and cat saliva, house dust mites, cockroaches and pollen.  If there are sensitized or susceptible individuals in the home, or when these contaminants are at elevated levels, people can become sick.

“There are many sources of these biological pollutants,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2, a Chicago based environmental consulting firm. “Pollens originate from plants; viruses are transmitted by people and animals; bacteria are carried by people, animals, and soil and plant debris; and household pets are sources of saliva and animal dander. The protein in urine from rats and mice is a potent allergen and when it dries can become airborne. Contaminated central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold and other sources of biological contaminants that can then be distributed throughout the home,” he continued.

By controlling the relative humidity level in a home, the growth of some sources of microbial contaminants can be minimized. A relative humidity of 30-50 percent is generally recommended for homes. Standing water, water-damaged materials, or wet surfaces also serve as a breeding ground for molds, mildews, bacteria and insects. House dust mites, the source of one of the most powerful biological allergens, grow in damp, warm environments.

To help educate the public about biological contaminants in the home, EC2 has helped sponsor a public outreach video on the topic.  The video can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4vkJ_Pjimo.
