Major developments over the previous quarter include: * In January 2011, Hurriet Daily News reported that the Turkey's Privatisation Administration (oIB) is planning the sale of some 2,000km of roads, two Bosporus bridges, Salipazari real estate in central Istanbul, as well as both the Derince and Izmir ports. * Turkey is planning the construction of 100 new high speed railway stations across the country, according to the Hurriyet Daily News. Construction will take place following the installation of a further seven high speed rail lines connecting Turkish cities in addition to a first line connecting Ankara and Konya. The first three stations will be built in Ankara. * The privatisation of distribution grids resumed at full speed over 2010 and all public distribution grids, except one, were sold for TRY132.3bn (Today's Zaman reported). Given the prerequisite of new owners to invest in the infrastructure, we see distribution grids driving some growth in the energy and utilities infrastructure sector. * Following the privatisation of electricity grids, Turkey's Privatisation Administration (oIB), announced that 2011 'will be the year of the privatisation of power plants' (Hurriyet Daily News reported). According to Today's Zaman, the privatisation will cover various power plants for some 16,000MW. * In January 2011, Turkey finally approved a new renewable energy law with a view to bring the domestic industry on par with the international renewables sector. Feed-in-tariffs specific for different technologies were introduced. In December 2010, the Agaoglo Group a acquired a 241,954 square metre (sq m) parcel of land worth in central Istanbul that will see the company embark upon one of Turkey's largest ever residential construction projects. The development follows the announcements of a string of mega residential and commercial construction projects in the city in recent months, highlighting the momentum that is building in the sector. We maintain broadly the same headline forecasts trend for Turkey's infrastructure and overall construction sector in BMI's new forecasts to 2020. Since Q111, we have, however, priced in stronger growth for 2010 in light of new quarterly data and a more bullish transport infrastructure outlook. The consecutive rises in our outlook for Turkey's infrastructure sector have also resulted in a higher Infrastructure Business Environment score, as Rewards have become much more favourable. We see significant upside potential for Turkey, whose infrastructure and construction market has strong domestic players and is buttressed by positive population and macro fundamentals.
