March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Experience history firsthand when replicas of Christopher Columbus’ ships Nina and Pinta dock at Tin City from April 1st through the 10th. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for walk-aboard self-guided tours.

The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools, and was called by Archaeology magazine “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The craftsmanship of construction and the details in the rigging make it a truly fascinating visit back to the Age of Discovery. The ‘Nina’ was used in the production of the film ‘1492’ starring Gerard Depardieu and directed by Ridley Scott.

General admission is  $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (age 60+), $6 ages 5-16 and children 4 and under are free. The ships are open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM. Teachers or groups wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call the ship directly at (787) 672-2152 or email columfnd@surfbvi.com to make arrangements.

Cruise Naples is the docking sponsor with Naples Waterfront Association and Pincher’s Crab Shack acting as media sponsors for the event. For additional ‘Nina’ and ‘Pinta’ at Tin City information, please visit http://www.thenina.com.

The forces behind getting these monumental ships to Tin City, Captains Lance and Harry Julian of Cruise Naples have worked closely with the Freedom Waters Foundation (FWF). The Foundation will be volunteering to man the operations of the ships for the duration of their dockage. They will also be coordinating A Day of Pirates’ Treasure on April 9th.

A Day of Pirates’ Treasure will be held at Tin City on April 9th from 10 AM to 6 PM. Open to the public, the one-day event will provide a variety of activities for kids and families to enjoy including a magic show, children’s pirate costume contest, face painting, free cruise for kids in costume from Cruise Naples, pirate themed movie viewing, scavenger hunt and more. Admission is free and all proceeds from the event (excluding Niña & Pinta earnings) will be donated to support the Freedom Waters Foundation.
