Follow on Google News | New Physiological Basis for Sigmund Freud's Id, Ego and Superego DescribedFew people know that Freud never actually defined the Id, Ego and Superego, or that these concepts are not formally used in psychotherapy today. A new novel by Bruce Nappi establishes the physiology behind them and explains how they work.
By: A3 Society In 1923, Sigmund Freud wrote a book, The Ego and the Id. In it he suggested that all human thoughts could be explained by 3 brain functions which he called the Es, Ich and Uber-Ich, which were translated into the Id, ego and super-ego. Most people don't know that Freud never precisely defined these functions, nor located them in the brain. No one else has since. So, though famous, they are not formally used in therapy. While trying to understand human consciousness, Nappi developed a psychological - physiological brain model that explained these functions. Freud was RIGHT! The first brain, which Nappi calls HULK, named after the cartoon character, is similar to Freud's Id. Hulk handles basic body functions. And, if they are not satisfied, can become just like the raging monster. The key breakthrough was recognizing that Hulk's functions are ALL inherited. The second function, which is similar to Freud's super-ego, he calls Mr. Grimm. This is the site of the human conscience. The key breakthroughs were recognizing that this function is all learned and came BEFORE the ego. Grimm is driven by sensory perceptions learned as time based sequences. Grimm is primarily a pattern recognizer and summarizer. AND Grimm is capable of recursion, i.e. monitoring it's own conclusions. The third function, similar to Freud’s ego, is human consciousness - the part that is awake. This function, referred to as THINKER, is also all learned. What gives Thinker its human traits is its functional ability to process summary information from Mr. Grimm, as well as its own summaries. Understanding these roles provides a profound new method to understand consciousness and mental illness. The books -- LIARS! Vol. 1: Scout to the Pole; and Vol. 2: Escape to Insanity -- are based on Nappi's experience as one of the Eagle Scouts on the 1965 North Pole Expedition.
