April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- LINCOLN, NEB – Don Stenberg, Nebraska State Treasurer and Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, today strongly criticized Sen. Ben Nelson’s vote to support taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood. Nelson voted against a ban on federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

“If there was any remaining doubt that Ben Nelson has abandoned the pro-life community, his vote to support taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood is all the proof we need,” Stenberg said.

“Nelson’s vote to support Planned Parenthood comes after he betrayed the pro-life community last year by casting the 60th vote for the pro-abortion Obamacare,” Stenberg said.

“Taxpayers and pro-life people in Nebraska and across America deserve a committed and trustworthy senator who truly respects life at all stages, born and unborn,” Stenberg said.

According to Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) who introduced the initial amendment to defund Planned Parenthood in the House Republicans’ budget, Planned Parenthood has performed 5.4 million abortions since its founding in 1927, receives $1 million a day and performs about 1,000 abortions a day.

Stenberg is nationally recognized as a pro-life leader. He has been endorsed by all Nebraska right to life organizations in all previous elections, and is most known for his argument in support of Nebraska's partial-birth abortion ban, Stenberg v. Carhart, in the United States Supreme Court. http://www.StenbergforSenate.com

Mr. Stenberg served as Nebraska Attorney General from 1990-2002 and was elected Nebraska State Treasurer in 2010 with 73 percent of the vote. Stenberg was the Republican U.S. Senate nominee in 2000 and although polls showed him starting behind Senator Ben Nelson by more than 30 percentage points, he turned it into the closest U.S. Senate race in Nebraska history.  Today, two published polls show Stenberg with a 4 to 6 percent lead over Senator Nelson, even though at the time the polls were taken he was not yet a candidate.
