April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Former Major League baseball outfielder, Darryl Strawberry will be St. Mary’s guest celebrity trader to help raise funds and awareness for children and families with special needs at BTIG’s ninth annual “Commissions for Charity Day” to be held on April 27, in BTIG’s New York office.  BTIG LLC, a global financial services firm specializing in institutional trading and related brokerage services, raised more than $15 million from equity and derivative trading commission profits over the last eight years for children’s charities, including The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children and Jacob’s Cure.  Institutional accounts that choose to do business with BTIG on this day will help increase the success of this charitable program.

“We are honored that St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children was selected as a benefiting organization,” said Jeffrey K. Frerichs, St. Mary’s President and CEO.  “St. Mary’s has been the region’s leading provider of pediatric post-acute care for some of New York’s most seriously ill and injured children.”

“St. Mary’s is one of only a handful of organizations around the country that is dedicated to providing intensive rehabilitation and specialized care for children with special needs and life-limiting conditions and I’m very proud to be able to assist them in this fund raising event”, said Darryl Strawberry, who helped the New York Mets to a World Series championship in 1986 and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999 during his 17-year career.

Following hospitalizations in acute care facilities for complications from premature birth, illness, and injury, or when special services are needed, children and their families come to St. Mary’s to receive care, learn to manage their illness or injury, and achieve a better quality of life.  As the largest provider of long-term home healthcare for children in New York State and one of the nation’s leading providers of pediatric post-acute care, St. Mary’s provides a continuum of care treating 4,000 children each day throughout the metropolitan area through a network of inpatient, home care and community programs and services, setting a standard of excellence in pediatric healthcare.

U.S. News and World Report recently ranked St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children as one of New York’s top facilities for skilled nursing in their 2011 Best Nursing Home review, receiving a perfect 15-star rating.  St. Mary’s was one of only six facilities to achieve this honor.
