The Cultural Politics of Barbie

April 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Barbie the All -American doll named after Ruth’s daughter  was able to do things women in decades passed had only dreamed of. With Barbie young girls went to college with the Barbie Goes to College playset. They dressed her in mod fashions like Jackie O, or mini-skirts , love beads and dangling earrings during the Woodstock era, Barbie normalized the fashions of her day and made it acceptable to parents as she came without the negatives concepts like free love and psychotropic drugs.
After all Barbie had clean cut eunuch Ken (Ken was actually named after Ruth Handler’s son Kenneth) as boyfriend and what could be safer than that?
Then in 1967 the black version of Barbie, “Colored” Francie appeared her skin was brown but her features were that of the original White Francie doll so she was really White Francie with an extreme tan alas, the world was not ready to integrate the toybox and she quickly disappeared to be replaced by Cali Girl Christie and her boyfriend Steven who had real African features and tons of cool clothes but none of the cool things Barbie had like a car or a home.
Finally real steps were taken to unite the racial disparities in Barbie’s world and in 1997 Mattel Inc. joined forces with Nabisco to create Oreo Fun Barbie so black girls and white girls could share cookies and and play with their respective white and black version Barbie dolls in harmony. No one realized until it was too late that in the African American community Oreo was a derogatory term for a person black on the outside but white on the inside just like the cookie!  In 2003 Saudi Arabia outlawed Barbie and informed the world that Barbie was not only Jewish but also a symbol of western decadence and perversion. So Arabia created its own version of Barbie named Fulla.
Unlike Barbie Fulla does not have a dream house or dream car she lives in the real world with her mother and father does not have a boyfriend  and would never wear clothes without sleeves or skirts above the knee. Fulla has an active social life which includes baking cakes for her friends, praying, and reading . Fulla also likes to remind young Muslim girls not to forget their full body covering garment the Abaya when they leave the house. Fulla also has a swimming pool though No one has ever seen her swim in it.
In 2009 Totally Tattoos Barbie got a lower back tattoo otherwise known as a “Tramp Stamp” Barbies friends Allan, Midge, and Skipper were appalled. During a protest rally in East LA  Cali Girl Teresa commented that Barbie hasn’t been the same since the gay rumors about Earring Magic Ken in 1993.
Ken wearing a left ear Cartier diamond stud , Gaultier purple faux-leather vest, and lavender mesh shirt, black jeans and shoes had no comment.
