Stay in Liverpool and celebrate International Beatles Week

One of the most iconic pop groups the world has ever seen is being celebrated this year in Liverpool. Take a trip back to where it all began for The Beatles

April 27, 2011 - PRLog -- In 1960, five men from Liverpool decided to set up their own rock band. More than 50 years on the iconic status of that very band is visible throughout the world.

The Beatles, formed in 1960, originally consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. However, later in the 60s, Sutcliffe and Best were replaced by Ringo Starr on drums.

The phenomena that is The Beatles is still at large today – even though only two of the band – Ringo Star and Paul McCartney – are still around.

Between 1963 and 1966, Beatlemania swept the country as the four Liverpudlians toured the country wowing fans north and south.

Please Please Me and With The Beatles were released in 1963, and in 1964, A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles For Sale followed suit. A Hard Day’s Night was the basis for a film, starring the group and directed by Richard Lester. The film was a mock documentary about the life and times of the men in 1964.

Their second film, called Help, was a spoof on the James Bond films and the soundtrack included Help and Ticket to Ride.

However, controversy hit the band in between 1960 and 1970 as the group split and Lennon, McCartney, Starr and Harrison all released solo albums.

In 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed in New York by Mark David Chapman, in the entrance to the building which he lived at. After his death, which was considered an assassination due to him being a high profile public figure, sales of his music and that of The Beatles soared as people paid their respects to the musician. His wife, Yoko Ono, along with millions of people, held a 10 minutes silence in his memory.

The Beatles were a band who made music and made headlines – and now their work is being celebrated in the city where it all began.
