May 2, 2011 - PRLog -- New York, New York (May 2,2011) - The 7th Annual OUTMUSIC Awards returns to center stage for a night of prestige and honor at IRVING PLAZA, May 23, 2011 at 7 p.m.  Hosted by the LGBT Academy of Recording Arts (LARA), this year’s awards show celebrates 20 years of music history while honoring and documenting the contributions of openly LGBTQ recording artists and performers in the music industry. A list of nominees is available at www.outmusicawards.com.

Originally scheduled for December 2010, the OUTMUSIC Awards were postponed due to economic difficulties. However, in response to the postponement, the organization has received overwhelming offers of support from companies and individuals in the community.

“So many openly gay recording artists and entertainers like Melissa Etheridge, Ricky Martin, Elton John, Ellen DeGeneres, Lance Bass and many others have exemplified courage to come out as an effort to erase the stigma associated with being openly gay in the music & entertainment industry,” says Diedra Meredith, chairwoman and CEO of OUTMUSIC –The LARA.  “We continue alongside these entertainment greats with our mission to bring awareness to these artists’ contributions in the music industry and do away with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy many have adopted.  We are happy to support these individuals and our many Academy members by honoring and documenting the success each has achieved that would, often time, be overlooked with the 7th Annual OUTMUSIC Awards.”

The OUTMUSIC Awards ceremony is the biggest night in LGBT entertainment and only organization of its kind in the world.   The highest and most prestigious honor in LGBT music, the 2010 OMAs will be hosted by Comedienne Tammy Peay with special appearance by Jonathan D. Lovitz and cast of Logo TV’s hit show “The Setup Squad”, Sahara Davenport of RuPaul’s Drag Race, cast from Logo TV’s the A-List, .

The Academy will honor several exceptional individuals for their excellence in the art of recording, performing and championing for equality.  Honorees include Melissa Etheridge – Lifetime Achievement Award, Chely Wright – Vanguard Award, international disco icon SYLVESTER – OUTMUSIC Icon Award, Randy Jones of the Village People Cowboy – Heritage Award and 2005 Kennedy Center ‘Women In Music’ Honoree Paula ‘Styx’ Hampton – The OUTMUSIC Living Legend Award.

The 7th Annual OUTMUSIC Awards is sponsored by LIVE Nation Irving Plaza, Dot429, Pink Approved, GO! Magazine, LOGO, Hello World Communications, Make-Up Forever Paris, Orbitz and Paramount Hotel New York.

OUTMUSIC is the premier 501C (3) not-for-profit organization created to empower, honor, and celebrate the achievements of openly LGBT recording artists and performers. OUTMUSIC is an advocate on behalf of these artists to raise awareness of their contributions to music and entertainment history.
