May 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Last month, WFIE Channel 14 reported on an asbestos removal project at a Carmi, Illinois high school.  Usually when parents learn of asbestos being removed from their child’s school it brings relief to parents’ minds, but this time many parents voiced concerns.

The reason for the parents’ concern was due to the fact that the asbestos removal project was beginning during the school year while the building is still being used.  “When properly conducted, asbestos removal projects like the one taking place in Carmi can be accomplished without causing danger to the building’s occupants,” reported Ed Chambers, the President of EC2, Inc., a leading provider of asbestos and environmental consulting services across Illinois and the Midwest.  “Asbestos removal is heavily regulated and when done properly will not pose a threat to people or the environment.”

In Illinois, the Illinois EPA Asbestos Unit is delegated authority by the U.S. EPA to enforce the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP).  NESHAP regulates asbestos during demolition, renovation and disposal.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber that was added to countless building materials in the past.  Asbestos was used to increase strength, corrosion resistance, acoustical dampening, provide thermal insulation and fire resistance.  When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed, asbestos fibers may be released into the air.  Breathing high levels of asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and diseases such as asbestosis. Because of the risks associated with asbestos it is crucial to follow mandatory regulations and work with an experienced environmental consultant to ensure the job is done correctly.

To help educate the public on asbestos dangers, EC2 has cosponsored a public outreach video on the topic that can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCpQYuK8ge8
