Dyslexia Positive in Ireland: New Approach to Learning Support

The Advanced Learning Academy in Carlow believes non intrusive and non confrontational observation is the best approach to determine the optimal learning and teaching support for your child with dyslexia. We believe in ‘Dyslexia Positive'.

May 11, 2011 - PRLog -- All too often dyslexia is looked upon negatively. Children with mild or severe dyslexia are often seen as victims, and not as clever as other children. Yet the truth is a lot more positive. Children with dyslexia are often gifted in areas other that reading and maths. They tend to make good leaders, great problem solvers, good diplomats and demonstrate strong social skills. The World has long benefited from those who are dyslexic across a wide field of sectors from entertainment to science to technology.

Children with dyslexia are often better than average and outperform their peers in many areas including; creative thinking, visual awareness, problem solving and verbal communication.

Children with dyslexia often go on to become successful in the arts and the media, in politics, in business and in scientific disciplines ranging from physics to mathematics and computer programming. And in many more fields. Famous people ranging from Albert Einstein (scientist) to Tom Cruise (actor) have benefited greatly in their careers and work from being dyslexic. Your child can too!

Dyslexia positive!

The World Federation of Neurologists, in 1968, defined dyslexia as "a disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing, and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities."

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty mainly affecting skills in reading and spelling of words.

Symptoms range from mild to severe and children respond well to early intervention and specialist learning support. Children with dyslexia have difficulties with; phonological awareness, self confidence, verbal memory and verbal processing speed

“The Advanced Learning Academy in Carlow offers a new approach to dyslexia”, says Jane Doyle, Principal who goes on to say, “No long waiting lists. No waiting for years to see results. We offer tailored learning support for children with dyslexia both in individual tuition and in group activities.

We will work with your child to determine what works optimally to enhance their learning and development. We focus on the learning challenges as well as on confidence-building. We prefer non intrusive and non-threatening observation rather than formal assessment to determine the optimal learning and teaching approach.”

Jane Doyle explains, “We use informal observation over a number of weeks as children play and, for example, as they do homework so we see and understand their learning style and how they approach academic work. We then tailor an optimal learning program that suits the individual child. Individualised support and not the traditional 'one system that fits all' approach."
