The U.S Government Buys 166 Chevrolet Volt Cars

May 24, 2011 - PRLog -- The government is purchasing 116 Chevy Volt vehicles in order to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles. In addition, the government will also install stations where the vehicles can be charged. Cities where the charging stations will be placed include San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington and Detroit. The Obama administration is plans to lessen the United States’ dependency on foreign oil gradually. By the year 2012 the government plans to only purchase fuel efficient cars.

The Chevy Volt is a vehicle that uses a traditional motor as well as an electric motor. The electric motor puts out 149 horsepower and 273 pound feet of torque and the traditional engine is a 1.4 Liter V4. Even though it is an electric car, it accelerates quite fast and smooth. The matter of charging the volt is rather easy, all you have to do is plug it into any electrical outlet. However, a home charging station is suggested for faster charging.

Standard features include a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, alloy wheels and the ability to play music from personal mp3 players. A feedback system encourages efficient driving and allows drivers to keep track of their driving habits; the graphics change colors when you are driving efficiently.

Most electric cars have range limitations but the Volt doesn’t thanks to its unique powertrain. The government is offering a $7500 tax credit with the purchase of the Chevy Volt in order to encourage the sales of environmentally friendly vehicles. The base cost is around the forty thousand dollar range.
