June 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, since the 15th century, Chatsworth House is a living and working testament to how a major country house can become so much more than just a crumbling pile in which an aristocratic family live. Chatsworth has been lovingly cared for, restored and kept in wonderful condition and is quite rightly one of the most popular historic houses in the country and any trip to the Peak District would not be complete without a visit.
Chatsworth House, garden, farmyard and adventure playground re-open on 13 March this year (2011). House - 11am-5.30pm (4.30pm last admission) Garden - 11am-6pm (5pm last admission) Farmyard and adventure playground - 10.30am-5.30pm (4.30pm last admission) Car Parking - The car park has an all day charge of £2 per car. There is also a car park, open every day, at Calton Lees, at the southern end of the park, off the B6012. There is an all-day charge of £2 per car. There is also car parking at the Chatsworth farm shop, in the village of Pilsley. Car parks close at 7pm.
The 'Palace of the Peak' is a family home which was built to be shared with visitors. You are invited to walk at your own pace through the house, absorbing the atmosphere of its beautiful rooms and the story that they tell of the family's history over the last 450 years. Looking out through the huge windows, with their gilded frames, there are views of the famous park and the garden with its waterworks.
The house contains one of Europe's finest private art collections, representing 4000 years of European culture and craftsmanship, from ancient Greece to modern work by British artists. These treasures are seen in magnificent rooms on all three floors of the house, from the grandeur of the 1st Duke's Painted Hall and State Apartments with their rich decoration and painted ceilings, to the 19th century Library, Great Dining Room and Sculpture Gallery. Wardens in the rooms can answer your questions, and there are beautiful guidebooks and an audio guide available.
