Vintage Subway Signs Take a New Track

Inspired by Iconic Aesthetic of Vintage Subway Roll Signs, Etsy Shop Flying Junction Creates Designer Signs and Prints Providing Urban Nostalgia to Home Decor

June 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Waterport, New York –  Driven by a deep affinity for vintage urban graphics and typography, artist-designer Ace Harrison and his business partner, Ben Hooper, spent hundreds of hours researching original New York City subway signs of the 1900’s before the launch of Flying Junction in November of 2010 on Etsy.  The shop sells authentic-looking replicas of the original subway signs and bus scroll prints in a variety of sizes on both paper and canvas, individually and in collections.

With immediate, enthusiastic demand from style-conscious Internet shoppers, Harrison began expanding the line to include prints representing neighborhoods and commuter lines in other cities in the U.S. and abroad including Paris, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago.  Many others are in the works as Harrison works, sometimes round-the-clock, to keep up with the interests and needs of a growing list of followers.

Though a few other shops also offer subways signs, an important element that distinguishes Harrison’s work from others is the fine, artistic attention to detail he puts into recreating the original lettering of NYC subway signs.  ”Original roll signs from NYC were created by hand, so there isn't an actual typeface that can be used. I spent a lot of time recreating all of the lettering by hand, keeping it as true to the originals as possible,” Harrison explains.

Along with reproductions of authentic subway signs and bus scrolls, shoppers can turn to Flying Junction for custom signs to represent travel destinations, specific neighborhoods, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, bands and concerts, family member names, important dates, etc.  Harrison says,  “Custom work has become my favorite thing to do; I love the fact that each print tells a unique story about the person or people behind it.”

A view of shoppers’ feedback at Flying Junction (FlyingJunction.Etsy.com) reveals the presence of a rapidly growing, professional business with a strong sense of customer service and satisfaction, including numerous comments expressing gratitude for detailed care given to packaging and shipment of items.

Available in a variety of sizes ranging from 11 x 17 inches to 12 x 36, and 20 by 30, Flying Junction products are printed on premium archival recycled canvas and papers using soy inks; prices start at $19 and go up to $130 for all but custom designs, which vary by complexity, size, and materials used in the finished piece.

Ace Harrison has worked as a professional artist and graphic designer for more than ten years. His t-shirt designs, available both online and in exclusive boutiques, have been worn by celebrities around the globe and are frequently spotted in celebrity photos, television productions, and music videos.
