July 13, 2011 - PRLog -- This week sees the British Open at the Royal St George’s course in Kent, where major name golfers will be battling it out for a share of the £5 million prize fund.

Names lined up for this year’s tournament, which begins on Thursday (14 July), include world number one Luke Donald and Omega watches Ambassador Sergio Garcia.

One notable player missing from the event will be Tiger Woods. The three times British Open winner announced last week that he was pulling out of the event as he is struggling to recover from injuries to his knee and Achilles tendon that was injured in April.

Even without Tiger, arguably the best known figure in the sport, TV coverage of the event will mean great publicity for companies sponsoring players and the event. Omega watches, sponsor of Open competitor Sergio Garcia, is just one brand that stands to increase sales of its luxury watches throughout the event.

In fact, this year looks likes it may be a creative rebirth for Garcia, who will be hoping to mimic his hero and fellow Spaniard, the late Seve Ballesteros.

Following a self-imposed nine week sabbatical after his last PGA Championship, Garcia has posted 11 top 25s in 17 starts, five of which have resulted in top ten finishes. Given his renowned ball-striking ability and Ballesteros-inspired creativity around greens, the British Open has always been Garcia's best opportunity to break through in a major.

One of the other major draws at this year’s event will be Luke McDonald. He has shown consistent form over the last six months, including his recent Scottish Open win and 16 top ten finishes in his last 18 events.

The British Open is the third of the big golfing tournaments, known as The Majors, to take place each year. It is also the oldest of the tournaments, having begun in 1860.

The event is due to be covered on BBC Television throughout the weekend. For more information on Omega watches, visit the Watch Hut at http://www.thewatchhut.co.uk.
