The Hare Krishna Movement (HKM), an initiative of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Bangalore celebrated Janmashtami, which marks the day of the appearance of Lord Krishna, at its Sri Radha Vrindavan-chandra Mandir in Vrindavan on 22nd August 2011.  Braj is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna and has for the last 5000 years or so, been revered as one of India’s most hallowed spiritual destinations.  

The atmosphere was one of joyous festivities and worship and the day-long celebration was attended by hundreds of devotees. Bhajans by Pandit Manish Sharma, kirtans and artis, followed by an abhishek culminating at midnight, the time when Lord Krishna appeared, were performed for the Lord and Jhulan seva, the symbolic act of rocking Krishna’s cradle were the important components that marked the day.  

Shri Suvyakta Narasimha Dasa, Vice President of the Hare Krishna Movement in Vrindavan said, “This is the day that we believe that Lord Krishna appeared on earth to reestablish moral and ethical principles, and we therefore celebrate this day with joy and festivity.  The Bhagvad Geeta, which He propounded holds relevance to this day and guides people towards righteous living and is particularly relevant in the current context. The Bhagvad Geeta is a powerful symbol of Krishna Consciousness. We rededicate ourselves to spreading the teachings of the Geeta to the society for spreading peace and harmony and to strengthen the moral and ethical fibre of the society on this very special day, which is the true celebration of Janmashtami.”
