Aug. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- After selling out of the previous edition, Energion Publications announces the release of the fifth edition of Who’s Afraid of the Old Testament God? by Dr. Alden Thompson. The book will be released on September 16, 2011 and will be available through major online retailers as well as via Ingrams for distribution to local bookstores.

The Old Testament God generally has a rather poor reputation, even in Christian circles.  But as the author points out, The Old Testament Scriptures can remain alive and will lead us to a fresh appreciation of all that God has done for us.

Targeted to thoughtful readers, this book addresses a cluster of issues often troubling for the person who seeks to understand the Old Testament.  Who’s Afraid of the Old Testament God? speaks very frankly about some of these “problems,” things like sin and the fall, Satan, “moral blemish” passages, strange laws, etc.

Who’s Afraid of the Old Testament God? (http://energionpubs.com/books/1893729907/) has been translated into several languages, and continues with strong sales more than 20 years after its original release.

Here are some comments on the book and on seminars on the Old Testament offered by Dr. Alden Thompson:

“I have found a new love for the Bible that Jesus read.  I was ‘missing’ half of God’s Word by not reading and studying the Old Testament.  I am grateful to Dr. Thompson for reintroducing me!” – Jody Neufeld, book editor at Energion Publications.

“For many people, including pastors, making sense of the Old Testament's many stories of violence, bloodshed and raw human sin is a tricky and sometimes confusing effort.  Dr. Thompson, though, does a masterful job of bringing together the God of grace and mercy, so clearly seen in the New Testament, with the God of justice and law in the Old Testament in a way that brings understanding and clarity for clergy and lay persons alike.  This easy to read text is academic enough to engage the scholar, yet conversational and helpful to those, like myself, who yearn for themes and principles that are easy to understand and apply.  I highly recommend this book in any Christian library.” – Ted Wood, Pastor, Rockledge United Methodist Church, Florida

“Dr. Alden Thompson, noted author, speaker, and college professor, has done a masterful job of unmasking the God of the Old Testament. His seminar and plenary presentations are insightful, refreshing and sometimes even humorous as he deals with those hard to answer questions about our God as revealed in the Old Testament. Who's Afraid of the Old Testament God? is a must read for all serious scholars of the Bible. You will encounter our God in a new light.” – Dr. Bob McKibben, Pastor, Daphne United Methodist Church, Alabama

Dr. Alden Thompson is currently Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Walla Walla University in College Place, Washington. He has a B.A. from Walla Walla University, M.A. from Andrews University, and Ph.D. in Old Testament and Judaic Studies from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

A popular speaker and seminar presenter, Dr. Thompson has published hundreds of scholarly and popular level articles and several books including Beyond Common Ground: Why Liberals and Conservatives Need Each Other and Escape from the Flames: How Ellen White Grew from Fear to Joy and Helped Me to Do it Too.

Alden and his wife, Wanda, live in Washington state.
