Al Sutton Wins "Short Documentary, Best Screenplay" Award at WMIFF for "Equality, I Am Woman"

Filmmaker Al Sutton's documentary of the Women's Movement, "Equality, I Am Woman", wins the "Short Documentary, Best Screenplay" award at 2011 WMIFF, World Music and Independent Film Festival, Washington, DC.

Aug. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- (Washington, DC)  Filmmaker Al Sutton's documentary of the historic, gender-equality March in New York City, "Equality, I Am Woman", wins the “Short Documentary, Best Screenplay" award at the 2011 WMIFF, World Music and Independent Film Festival, Washington, D.C.   WMIFF Founder and Festival Director, June Daguiso, made the announcement at the red carpet WMIFF Award Gala Event, August 20, 2011, at the Capital Hilton (DC), where Al Sutton received the award.

“Equality, I Am Woman” portrays a moving and accurate representation of the Women’s Movement, and documents the largest gender-equality event in U.S. history.  Narrated by author and publisher, Gloria Steinem, and Veteran Feminist of America Founder and President, Jacqui Ceballos, the film features the music of Helen Reddy, excerpts of Betty Friedan’s speech at Bryant Park, and photographs by world renowned photojournalist, Bettye Lane.  The documentary was co-produced by Maggie Jones and Barbara Masry, with Stephanie Dworkin, video editor, and Jeanne McGill, publicist/ line producer.

“Al Sutton is well respected for his support of equality for women as essential to human rights, and for merging those ideals with the arts,” VFA President Jacqui Ceballos said. “Al Sutton brilliantly captured the spirit of the movement on film..”  

For Women’s Equality Day, celebrated each year on August 26th, the film screened at the Pompano Beach, Fl., Democratic Women's Club,  the Ridgefield, Ct. gallery of famed artist, Suzanne Benton, and at the Scottsdale/Phoenix National Organization for Women (NOW) Chapter, in Phoenix, Az.  The film also recently screened at the AOF International Film Festival in Pasadena, Ca. and the National Arts Club, New York City.

About Al Sutton, MD:  
A civil rights activist, Al Sutton participated in many peace marches and demonstrations in the ‘70’s.  Al Sutton has produced a variety of award winning films including documentaries and theatrical films.  He is also a musician, and operates his own record label, Alsut Records.   He is a member of SAG and BAFTA.  A feature film, Caballo, written by Al Sutton, is also in production.

Currently he is collaborating with author, David Livingstone Smith, to create a multi-media  production consisting of live performance, film and music, entitled, "The Most Dangerous Animal", which challenges the culture of violence, and explores the role of film, music and theater in social change.

The World Music and Independent Film Festival promotes Independent films and  provides a public forum for independent and experimental filmmakers to showcase  features, shorts, and documentaries.
