Mold Health Effects in Indoor Environments Exposed

Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Last month, Chicago’s SouthtownStar published a report about a lawsuit that was recently filed by an Illinois woman.  The woman had worked at a medical facility where she claims her blood became infected with mold.  Her suit claims the facility was contaminated with mold due to water damage in the structure.  She is reportedly seeking $50,000 in damages and court costs.

Lawsuits regarding mold occur on a regular basis.  While some potential health effects related to mold exposure remain controversial, other health effects are well recognized by the science and healthcare communities.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Inhalation exposure to mold indoors can cause health effects in some people. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and, in some cases, potentially toxic substances or chemicals (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.”  The same EPA documents goes on to state, “In addition, mold exposure may result in opportunistic infections in persons whose immune systems are weakened or suppressed.”

EC2, Inc., a Chicago-based IAQ and environmental consulting firm, has handled thousands of cases involving mold growth in indoor environments.   “When mold does grow indoors, the occupants of a building may begin to report odors and a variety of symptoms including headaches, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and aggravated asthma symptoms,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2.  “These and other symptoms may be associated with exposure to elevated levels of mold. These same symptoms may be caused by other exposures or conditions unrelated to mold growth as well.   A thorough site investigation and environmental testing can determine if mold is the culprit and help identify the source of the IAQ problem,” he continued.
