Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- ATHENS, Georgia - When Kyle Thomas Glasser decided to travel to Central America with International Service Learning, he had no idea how much it would change his life. But a life-changing experience was exactly what it was.

As a student at UGA, Kyle Thomas Glasser has always been dedicated to helping others through his work. But traveling to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in 2010 was an eye-opener for Georgia native Kyle Thomas Glasser. “Many of the individuals that we interacted with live under conditions that are not easily imagined by normal American citizens,” Kyle Thomas Glasser recalled. “These individuals often lacked basic knowledge of sanitary conditions and had no easy access to medical care.”

Kyle Thomas Glasser grew up in Georgia, where he attended Brookwood High School, graduating with honors in 2008. But it was Kyle Thomas Glasser’s faith that led him to take the 2010 medical mission trip. An active member of St. Marguerite Catholic Church, Kyle Thomas Glasser was drawn to the organization, which provides medical care and education to underprivileged areas throughout the world.

The medical outreach that Kyle Thomas Glasser joined was a two-week program that provided him with on-the-job training while helping those less fortunate. For Kyle Thomas Glasser and the other students, the trip provided an opportunity to see areas of the world where medical attention is scarce. Kyle Thomas Glasser found that many of the people he spoke to had never even been exposed to medicine.

“Being able to provide assistance to these individuals was a wonderful privilege for me,” Kyle Thomas Glasser said. “Seeing the actions of both myself and the others on the trip influencing and improving the lives of these individuals was greatly rewarding.” The 2010 trip took Kyle Thomas Glasser to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where he was able to increase the awareness of public health techniques amongst the residents, as well as gain valuable experience in village triage methods. Kyle Thomas Glasser’s time in Central America only added to his aspirations of becoming a doctor, feeding his determination to help others.

Even as a youth, Kyle Thomas Glasser was helping others. He performed volunteer work in high school, tutoring others in mathematics. Kyle Thomas Glasser is currently a senior at the university, where he is a member of the American Medical Student Association and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society, among others. Still, Kyle Thomas Glasser thinks back on his time in Central America, which drives him to continue to help others. In that vein, Kyle Thomas Glasser is hopeful to have the opportunity in the future to positively influence others around him, whether it be as a doctor curing a patient’s ailments or as a common citizen helping others in society.
