Follow on Google News | Kyle Thomas Glasser Travels to Central America to Provide Medical Assistance to Those in NeedFuture doctor Kyle Thomas Glasser talks about how his work with International Service Learning changed his life.
As a student at UGA, Kyle Thomas Glasser has always been dedicated to helping others through his work. But traveling to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in 2010 was an eye-opener for Georgia native Kyle Thomas Glasser. “Many of the individuals that we interacted with live under conditions that are not easily imagined by normal American citizens,” Kyle Thomas Glasser recalled. “These individuals often lacked basic knowledge of sanitary conditions and had no easy access to medical care.” Kyle Thomas Glasser grew up in Georgia, where he attended Brookwood High School, graduating with honors in 2008. But it was Kyle Thomas Glasser’s faith that led him to take the 2010 medical mission trip. An active member of St. Marguerite Catholic Church, Kyle Thomas Glasser was drawn to the organization, which provides medical care and education to underprivileged areas throughout the world. The medical outreach that Kyle Thomas Glasser joined was a two-week program that provided him with on-the-job training while helping those less fortunate. For Kyle Thomas Glasser and the other students, the trip provided an opportunity to see areas of the world where medical attention is scarce. Kyle Thomas Glasser found that many of the people he spoke to had never even been exposed to medicine. “Being able to provide assistance to these individuals was a wonderful privilege for me,” Kyle Thomas Glasser said. “Seeing the actions of both myself and the others on the trip influencing and improving the lives of these individuals was greatly rewarding.” The 2010 trip took Kyle Thomas Glasser to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where he was able to increase the awareness of public health techniques amongst the residents, as well as gain valuable experience in village triage methods. Kyle Thomas Glasser’s time in Central America only added to his aspirations of becoming a doctor, feeding his determination to help others. Even as a youth, Kyle Thomas Glasser was helping others. He performed volunteer work in high school, tutoring others in mathematics. Kyle Thomas Glasser’s hard work in high school paid off in the form of scholarships— Kyle Thomas Glasser is also an accomplished musician. During high school, Kyle Thomas Glasser received numerous awards for his talent on the piano and saxophone, including the esteemed Gold Cup for Twelve Years of Superior Ratings in Piano by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Kyle Thomas Glasser didn’t stop with music, though. He was active in the arts and sports, playing recreational basketball and baseball. Currently, Kyle Thomas Glasser is working hard at pursuing his dream. Shadowing Dr. Jeff Traub in Atlanta, Kyle Thomas Glasser has spent time observing surgeries in progress, as well as accompanying Dr. Traub on his rounds and helping during office hours. Kyle Thomas Glasser is currently a senior at the university, where he is a member of the American Medical Student Association and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society, among others. Still, Kyle Thomas Glasser thinks back on his time in Central America, which drives him to continue to help others. In that vein, Kyle Thomas Glasser is hopeful to have the opportunity in the future to positively influence others around him, whether it be as a doctor curing a patient’s ailments or as a common citizen helping others in society. Achieving an overall GPA of 3.96, Kyle Thomas Glasser added to that scholarship a breadth of involvement in extra curricular activities. From the Brookwood Leadership Team to the arts and sports, Kyle Thomas Glasser was a standout. An established pianist and saxophonist, Glasser received numerous awards for his music at the state level. Kyle Thomas Glasser was also recognized at the national level for his music, achieving the coveted Gold Cup for Twelve Consecutive Years of Superior Ratings in Piano by the National Federation of Music Clubs.
