Officeworks bans sale of APRIL paper products to help protect Sumatran tiger habitat

Sept. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- In a major step in the right direction, Officeworks has taken decisive action to save endangered forest species by banning the sale of paper products made by Asian pulp and paper giant, APRIL.

The positive move came after it was revealed that the APRIL paper products were being made from forests vital for the survival of the Sumatran tiger.

After taking this bold action for forest protection, it is now up to Officeworks to really grab the tiger by the tail and help save Victoria’s most endangered animal, the Leadbeater’s possum, by also removing Reflex paper products from its stores.

Australian Paper, the makers of Reflex branded paper products, currently uses native forests from Victoria’s Central Highlands to make many of its products. The Central Highlands contain high conservation value native forests and is the last refuge of the endangered Leadbeater’s Possum.

“The next logical step is for Officeworks to immediately demand that Australian Paper, the makers of Reflex paper, move entirely out of native forests into plantations”, said Luke Chamberlain, our Victorian Campaign Manager.

This will help secure Australian timber jobs in Australia’s vast plantation resources after years of job losses in native forest logging.

“There is a real opportunity for creating Australian jobs based on a progressive plantation paper industry that is a real alternative to destroying native forests in Australia and overseas. Officeworks and Australian Paper can become real market leaders, benefiting both” added Luke.

Recently, Australian Paper lost the ability to print the internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Certification (FSC) logo on Reflex Paper, in a major blow to the company’s environmental credibility.
