Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Musicorp, a leading distributor and manufacturer of musical instruments, lighting products and accessories, is pleased to announce the winners of the third annual Musicorp “Passion & Learning for Aspiring Youth” Instrument Essay Contest! Musicorp’s PLAY Instrument Essay Contest focuses on music education in Charleston, SC schools by offering students in middle school a chance to obtain and learn a musical instrument of their choice.

Musicorp was thrilled to present seven PLAY winners with an instrument of their choice during the 2011 award ceremony on September 19th, 2011 at Musicorp Headquarters in North Charleston, South Carolina. Proud family members, school faculty, band directors, and Musicorp employees attended the ceremony to help celebrate the winning students who were selected from nearly 150 of their peers. Congratulations to the following students for winning: Luzaury Colon-Figueroa, a flute, Ian Bongalonta, a trumpet, Asa Payton Gaillard, a violin, Camille Green, a clarinet, Logan Miller, a trumpet, Hunter Victoria Jones, a violin, and to Ramon Lavender, a clarinet. Each winning student also received a bag of maintenance kits, stands, and other small accessories to help them learn and care for their new instrument. Donations were given directly by Musicorp employees to help fund this project through an employee Silent Auction and other inter-office fundraisers.

The PLAY contest, founded by Musicorp employees Paula McHoney and Sharon Crocker, was developed to foster the gift of music in young students. The program has seen significant growth and participation each year, and has enabled many students who cannot afford to purchase or rent an instrument, the opportunity to own a brand new instrument of their choice.  Students participate in the contest by submitting an essay of 150 to 250 words addressing three questions:  Which musical instrument would you like to win and why? How will a new musical instrument help you achieve your future goals? Why is education in music important? Each student is also required to be enrolled or to enroll and participate in a school music program.
