By: Tornado News How did this contest come about? Our military customers often ask us for new and specific designs that mean a lot to them. The request for a Navy Snipes design came about just before we decided to launch our Artist Search Contest. "We're killing two birds with one stone" says our Marketing Department. "We need more artists and someone is asking for a Navy Snipe design. We can do both!". So here we are, in search of talented Graphic Artists who can meet the demands of our military customers. So what is a Navy Snipe? We had fun researching this one for our contest. Apparently, these guys work on Navy ships in the boiler and engine rooms, which is monikered "the hole". There was not much respect for these guys during the early days of war. Upper deck mates ridiculed them and didn't extend the same privileges that they enjoyed, like sleeping quarters, good food, etc. Not until one man, stood up for his rights and the rights of his fellow mates. His name was John Snipes, and he demanded equality among the crew regardless of what their job was and asked that the ridicule among ship mates cease. After being turned down and laughed at by the deck crew, Snipes ordered his men to shut down the engines. This got their attention. In short, Snipes was instrumental in bringing about change in the system on his ship. These changes became universal in the Navy and were extended to the entire Naval Fleet. Navy Engineers earned the respect of the Deck crew and soon became known as Snipe's men and over the years as simply, Snipes. From what we understand, these early Snipes are a dying breed.
