Parker Urban Greenscapes Installs the Largest Bio Wall in The United States

Oct. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- The Drexel students, faculty and visitors are greeted each day by this mammoth 22-foot wide, 80-foot tall biowall which boasts over 1,500 plants.

The biowall is actually an integrated part of the building’s air handling system. Air is actively drawn through the wall of plants then past their root systems. In the root zone, highly specialized microbes actively degrade pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene into the benign constituents of water and carbon dioxide. The clean air is then distributed throughout the space.

“The Drexel BioWall is one of the most significant advancements in controlling indoor air quality in the US. Parker is proud to be a part of this extremely important project and its success," said Richard Parker, President of Parker Interior Plantscapes Inc.

Located in the basement of the Science building are two 500-gallon water reservoirs that capture the constant flow of water and recirculate it to the top of the wall. Parker's horticultural service technicians maintain the biowall system suspended from a Boson’s chair. The maintenance ensures the sustainability of the plants to consistently provide the building with clean air.
