How to look after hand tools and removing rust.

Hand tools are expensive tools but the good quality ones are well made and made to last but if they are mistreated they will not last long and they will not perform their tasks correctly.

Home owners have quite a collection of hand tools over the years mainly from collecting them along the way when jobs arise. Many hand tools are stored in sheds and garages whilst others are not stored away at all and when they are next used, they are almost useless.
Hand shears and hand pruners are typical examples of hand tools that will quickly rust and become blunt and they will not work properly again until they are cleaned properly and sharpened or you could invest in a new pair but over time, this proves to be rather costly.
There are lots of different ways that rust can be removed from hand tools and there are lots of different solutions that can be used to remove the rust without damaging the steel. The one main problem with using rust removal solutions on hand tools is damage to the steel, any solution you use should be checked thoroughly that it is suitable for the material you are treating.
There are other methods of rust removal including steel wool and sand paper but these methods should be carried out with caution because again they can damage the steel material of the hand tools.

Also an important factor is to ensure that you evaluate the amount of rust on the hand tools, many hand tools are only slightly rusted and in this instance, the rust is easy to remove. Many hand tools have heavy rust which will take a little longer to remove.

In some instances heavy removal of rust may damage the hand tools and caution should always be taken to ensure you do not damage the hand tools beyond repair.

Hand tools are expensive and they should be taken care of, the main reason hand tools are often ruined is because they are left out in the elements. Hand tools only have to be left exposed for a couple of days and that’s often long enough to render them useless.
Hand tools should be stored away in a dry place, preferably off the floor to avoid damp and when home owners come to use them again, they will be as good as new, looking after your hand tools is much better and cheaper than replacing damaged ones.
