Nov. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- In 1966, Illinois became one of the first states to regulate pesticides.  With much of the land in Illinois used for farming purposes, which traditionally utilize large amounts of pesticides, it is important to keep these chemicals away from people’s homes, schools and places of business.

In agricultural settings, one of the frequent problems that can impact nearby communities occurs when pesticides drift allows the chemicals to impact unintended areas.  These pesticides can make their way into homes through open windows and by settling in dust and dirt that is later tracked into homes.

Agricultural use of pesticides is not the only concern for many families in the Midwest.  According to a recent survey, 75 percent of U.S. households used at least one pesticide product indoors during the past year. Products used most often are insecticides and disinfectants. Another study suggests that 80 percent of most people's exposure to pesticides occurs indoors and that measurable levels of up to a dozen pesticides have been found in the air inside homes.  In households with children under five years old, almost one-half stored at least one pesticide product within reach of children.

Illinois-based EC2, Inc., has a long tradition of helping businesses, institutions and families prevent pesticide poisoning and needless exposures.  Ed Chambers, the President of EC2, has decades of air and surface monitoring experience identifying pesticides both in the indoor and outdoor environments.

“Because people can go to their nearby hardware store or supermarket and easily buy all types of pesticides they often don’t recognize the potential hazards of improperly using or storing these products,” reported Mr. Chambers.  “This is especially true when young children are involved.  The other thing not always recognized by the public is that some pesticides leave behind residual effects that could cause health concerns long after the initial product was used.  Fortunately, there are surface and air sampling methods available that can help to identify pesticides and other chemicals that may be present.”
