Nov. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Burkholderia cepacia is the name for a group or “complex” of bacteria that can be found in soil and water and survive for extended periods of time in moist environments. Also known as BCC or B. cepacia, the bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.

Burkholderia cepacia poses little medical risk to most healthy people. However, people who have certain health problems including a weakened immune system or chronic lung diseases, particularly cystic fibrosis, may be more susceptible to infections from Burkholderia  cepacia.

The bacteria are also a known cause of infections in hospitalized patients.  The effects of Burkholderia cepacia on people can vary widely, ranging from no symptoms at all to serious respiratory infections.

Burkholderia  cepacia can also be spread to susceptible persons by:
•   Person-to-person contact
•   Contact with contaminated surfaces
•   Exposure to the bacteria in the environment

“Transmission of Burkholderia cepacia from contaminated medicines and devices has occurred in healthcare settings,” reported Susan White, Ph.D., CMC.  Dr. White is the President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC), a leading indoor air quality (IAQ) and infectious disease prevention consulting firm.  “The organism can also be spread from person-to-person so hospitals, clinics and other locations that may have infected people need to take extra precautions.  Proper sanitation and disinfection procedures, personal hygiene and other precautionary measures can help prevent the spread of the bacteria.  At SEHC we have extensive experience helping hospitals, daycares, penitentiaries and other places at risk identify potential microbial threats and implement preventive measures,” she continued.

SEHC recently sponsored a public outreach video about Burkholderia cepacia in healthcare environments, it can be seen at:
