250,000 New Zealanders have an incurable disease

If you listen to many men talk, you would think that Homer Simpson was the only person with a beer belly. Two powerful organisations in New Zealand have teamed up to fight obesity, diabetes and related health issues, using science and common sense.

Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Modern medicine, healthy living and self-awareness have been gradually increasing our life expectancy for many generations, but now the trend is in danger of reversing due to the rapid increase in diabetes numbers.

A quarter of a million people in New Zealand already have diabetes with at least the same number of people who are at serious risk, and these numbers are climbing quickly.

John Denton, General Manager, Diabetes NZ Auckland is passionate about helping people,
“Many people are playing Russian Roulette every day with their food choices and too little activity; once that gene bullet goes off, there is often no way back” says Denton.

“Everybody thinks that their excess weight and their lifestyle aren’t bad enough to create problems, but experience tells us a lot different. If you listen to many New Zealand men talk, you would think that Homer Simpson was the only one with a beer belly.  Reports show that only 36% of obese men surveyed reckon they have a problem with their BOAT (Bit Of A Tummy)."

With around 60% of us overweight, a "BOAT" is becoming accepted as "normal" and it may not worry us too much.   However, a "Bit of a Tummy" goes with a "bit" of diabetes, high blood pressure and blood fats.

And, a "bit" of a heart attack or a "bit" of a stroke can ruin your life!

Diabetes NZ Auckland shows people how to assess their risk and provides dietitian services, education and valuable tools to it’s members via newsletters, counselling and local community initiatives.

Diabetes NZ Auckland has added another powerful weapon to their arsenal by forming a partnership with Aspire for Life, a scientifically proven weight loss and healthy living program.

Aspire for Life provides a unique “family friendly” way to healthier living using online coaching, affordable supermarket food and delicious recipes. The program is simple to follow and helps both parents and children to develop good habits for a longer and happier life. Dr Tim Lindley, heads up the Aspire for Life team of professionals.
