Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- DALLAS – KaiNexus, a web-based software company that makes improvement easier for healthcare organizations, announced today the release of the revised second edition of the book Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement, authored by Mark Graban, the company’s Chief Improvement Officer.

The book was originally published by Productivity Press in August 2008 and was awarded a prestigious Research and Professional Publication Award by the Shingo Prize. Lean Hospitals has often appeared in the #1 sales position in Amazon.com’s Healthcare Administration category. The first edition is being translated into seven languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, and Thai.

The updated and revised second edition includes updated data from leading healthcare organizations that are using the “lean” improvement methodology, an approach that is based on the famed Toyota Production System. The new edition also includes new case studies and new material on additional Lean management practices that are being used in healthcare around the world. The book also introduces healthcare readers to the concept of “kaizen” or small, daily continuous improvements that are driven by frontline staff and their managers, following the scientific method.

“The success of my book’s first edition goes to show how ‘lean’ is spreading throughout healthcare, for the benefit of patients, staff members and physicians, and the long-term financial stability of healthcare organizations,” said Graban, adding, “As countries around the world face rapidly increasing costs and pressures to improve quality and patient safety, the continued adoption of ‘lean’ will help provide better patient care that is more affordable and more accessible.”

Gregory Jacobson, MD, co-founder and CEO of KaiNexus said, “We are excited to see the publication of this new edition, as the improvement methodology that is built into KaiNexus’ software, is completely compatible with the ‘lean healthcare’ approach.” He added, “Our company and our product is founded on the ‘kaizen’ style of staff-driven continuous improvement and that is, of course, a core pillar of ‘lean’ in all industries,” added Jacobson.
