TransActive Addresses Right-Wing Attacks on Transgender Children

Dec. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- In an end of year fundraising appeal, Portland-based transgender child and youth services organization TransActive Education & Advocacy names FOX News, the religious right and other ultra-conservative commentators and organizations as instigators in perpetuating the physical and emotional abuse of children and youth who do not conform to gender stereotypes.

"It is clear that the lives of transgender and gender non-conforming children, youth and their families are being systematically attacked by ideologically driven hate mongers like FOX News' Dr. Keith Ablow, the Family Research Council, MassResistance, NARTH and others."

With the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and polls indicating that a majority of Americans support same-sex marriage the fundamentalist far-right religious and political factions are increasingly directing their intolerance, lies and misinformation at those who are gender non-conforming.

"They have relentlessly targeted gender non-conforming children from Maine, New York, Colorado, Washington and more. The have called for boycotts of Macy's department store chain because a store in Texas fired an employee for harassing a transgender teen for using a female dressing room."

In a recent interview with the Portland Mercury newspaper, TransActive Executive Director Jenn Burleton said; "Doing nothing is not the same as doing nothing. Doing nothing actually leaves these kids in trouble. Statistically speaking, based on prevalence estimates, there are about 3,200 trans kids in the Portland metro area alone. We're currently working with 70 families. So we're short by about 3,100 kids."
