Free Geolocation Database for the Americas

Jan. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- The company has announced the latest release of the Countries of the World (COW) and the Administrative Divisions of the Americas (ADA) geospatial databases.

The COW database contains 69 distinct fields of data for the 249 countries, territories and dependencies (political entities) recognized by the United Nations, including ISO official country names in English, French, Spanish and Russian, United Nations FAO country names in Italian, and EKI country names in Estonian.

The ADA database contains 30 distinct fields of data for all first level administrative divisions of countries in North and South America, including ISO subdivision codes, US BGN approved names and local names recognized by the country. The database additionally contains data on population statistics, land mass, official language, government portal websites, and postal code information.

“This level of public access to direct download of data compiled from worldwide geographic information system databases is unprecedented”, says Karl Wischnofske, Co-founder Opengeocode.org.

Many of the worldwide databases have mandates to make their data available to the general public. According to Andrew Ferlitsch, Co-founder Opengeocode.org, “the access to data from these systems still is limited by text-based only search, partial or no direct download of data, and different formats, indexing and record identification systems. It's been an exciting challenge to develop methods to extract and compile this data, so that application developers can now obtain worldwide geospatial data from a one-stop single source.”
