Pneumocystis Pneumonia Exposed in New Online Video

Jan. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses health risks due to Pneumocystis pneumonia and exposure to Pneumocystis jirovecii.

Pneumocystis pneumonia, also known as PCP or pneumocystosis is a form of pneumonia that can be life threatening.  It is caused by the yeast-like fungus known as Pneumocystis jirovecii.   It had previously been incorrectly classified as a protozoan.

This pathogen is specific to humans and has not been shown to infect other animals.  
Its former name, Pneumocystis carinii, is still in common usage. As a result, Pneumocystis pneumonia is also known as Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and incorrectly as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

“Pneumocystis jirovecii is found worldwide.  Some reports show that 75% of children, by the age of 4, are seropositive to the microorganism,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “We hope this new online video helps to educate people about potential health risks that may occur due to exposure to this microbial pathogen.”
