The concept of the novel was said to be from the times Joann spent on the La Jolla Native American reservation with her family during summertime camping trips. "There was a man who would sit around this giant camp fire and tell stories. If my parents couldn't find me riding down the river, then they could find me there, lost in the world the story teller created." Joann says, recalling one of the reason's she loves to write.

I Am Wolf is the first book in a series that brings Native American folklore and spiritualism to life.
