By: Schubach Aviation In addition to the corporate-purchased gifts, employees of Schubach Aviation, San Diego’s leading private air charter firm, pitched in with the charitable effort by donating zip-lock bags, Lysol wipes, and other operational necessities for the shelter via a collection box set up at the company’s Palomar Airport headquarters. “This was an amazing donation,” said Katie Woolsey, public relations coordinator for the Escondido Humane Society. “As an independent, non-profit organization, we rely on community support to continue our life-saving work, and Schubach Aviation always comes through for us. Their recent donation went a long ways in making the holidays a lot brighter for the more than 600 animals currently in our care and awaiting adoption.” At the start of every holiday season, Schubach Aviation contacts the Escondido Humane Society and asks them what they need most. The organization provides a “wish list”, which the company then works to fulfill through employee donations and purchases coordinated through Escondido PetSmart and local veterinarians. PetSmart processes the order ahead of time and arranges for a forklift operator to be on standby to help load Schubach Aviation’s order on its delivery truck. Melrose Veterinary Hospital of Escondido has provided assistance in the past by helping to obtain special prescription dog food in bulk. “When I walk into these shelters, it just breaks my heart,” said Henry Schubach, president of Schubach Aviation. “If I could, I’d take all the dogs home. So if in some small way we can make their lives better for a period of time while they’re in the shelter and until they have real homes, that makes us all feel better.” At Schubach Aviation, animals are close to employees’ hearts. Bob, Schubach’s beloved Golden Retriever, greets customers at the office each today, along with his companion, Brailey, a black Labrador-mix who was adopted from the Escondido Humane Society six years ago. Schubach Aviation actively supports other animal welfare organizations, including Helen Woodward Animal Center, to which it donated $10,160 in 2011 alone. “We also have some serious dog lovers among our customer base,” said Schubach. “If they’d like to participate next year, we’ll give them the opportunity to do so. I’d like to see this effort become bigger every year.” The mission of the Escondido Humane Society is to promote responsible pet ownership by teaching compassion, respect, and caring for all living creatures. The organization advocates the elimination of animal abuse, pet overpopulation and homelessness of companion animals. The Escondido Humane Society is located at 3450 East Valley Parkway Escondido.
