Indoor Environmental Professionals Battle Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Feb. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Recently, researchers from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of California in San Francisco announced a possible link between some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and airway inflammation.  The research, conducted on laboratory mice, found the bacteria can cause white blood cells to produce large amounts of histamine.  This elevated histamine level results in inflammation which is a common symptom of asthma.  Pseudomonas was also blamed for a recent outbreak of infections at a neonatal unit in a hospital in Northern Ireland that resulted in the deaths of three newborns.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod shaped bacteria.  It is a common microorganism that can cause disease in animals, including humans.   The bacteria are also the cause of various plant diseases.

It can be found in soil, water, skin flora and many man-made environments.  It has the ability to utilize a wide range of organic material for food.   In humans and animals this versatility enables the microorganism to infect damaged tissues and infect those with weakened immune systems.

“Since it thrives on many types of surfaces, this type of bacteria has been known to be found on and in medical equipment,” reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President of Legends Environmental Insurance Services, a leading provider of insurance coverage to the environmental and infection control industries.  “This can cause cross-infections in hospitals and clinics and post surgical infections.  According to some reports, as many as one in ten hospital-acquired infections (HAI) are due to this type of bacteria.  Fortunately, there are professionals who can test for the bacteria to see if it is present so that preventive measures can be implemented or to help pinpoint the source of an outbreak,” he continued.
