Feb. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Wockhardt Hospitals organised and conducted a live workshop on minimally invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. Standard procedures for heart surgery can be most invasive but in a minimally invasive surgery, the degree of incision can be minimised and the surgery is performed without the use of heart-lung machine. The faculty for the workshop were and Dr. K G Jayaprasanna, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals and Dr. Mark Ruel, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Professor & HOD, Ottawa University.

Dr. Mark Ruel, who was there to share his research and experiences, was recently awarded the Gold Medal in Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, and has also received several other awards of excellence. Dr. Mark Ruel has also to his credit, over 200 original research publications, international conference presentations, book chapters and reviews.

The Wockhardt Hospitals Surgeon, Dr. K. G. Jayaprasanna has learnt from and practiced in various renowned centres within and outside of India. He has an exposure to more than 7500 Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular surgeries. Dr. K. G. Jayaprasanna drew attention to the advantages of a minimally invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. In an open-chest surgery, the heart and its vessels are exposed through median sternotomy, where the breastbone is divided. This is a very invasive and traumatic part of a standard heart surgery. In comparison, a minimally invasive procedure uses small incisions to access the heart without stopping the heart or dividing the breastbone and ribcage. A minimally invasive surgery causes fewer traumas and the recovery time is much shorter.

Renowned doctors & surgeons across Nagpur and Central India had participated in the workshop. Dr. P K Desphande, Senior Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon who was the moderator for the live workshop facilitated smooth interactions between the audience and the faculty, contributing to the workshop’s success.
