Bacteroides Exposed in New Online Video

Feb. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses Bacteroides and how they can impact human lives and indicate fecal contamination.

Bacteroides is a genus of Gram-negative, bacillus bacteria.  They comprise a significant portion of the normal human flora, particularly in the intestinal tract.  Here they play an essential part in processing complex molecules into simpler ones in the host’s intestines.

“Bacteroides are significant as an alternative fecal indicator organism since they make up such a large amount of the normal fecal flora, have a high degree of host specificity and typically have a low potential to grow in the general environment,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “Some species can also be opportunistic human pathogens.  Identifying Bacteroides is often useful when determining the potential presence of dangerous bacteria following a flood or sewage contamination in a building.  This type of testing may also be used to detect the presence of fecal contamination in recreational waters. We hope this video helps to educate people about ways to protect their homes and health from this microbe.”
