Feb. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- The Apple iPhone 5 is expected to sport a 12 megapixel camera, making it one of the most powerful camera phones available upon its release in the summer of 2012. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is also expected to have this feature, which is also found on the recently released Sony Xperia S. In this article I will look at a couple of upcoming releases with a 12 megapixel camera.

The first smartphone to boast a camera of this resolution was the Nokia N8 back in 2010. Although impressive at the time, many found the results below expectations for a camera with such a high pixel count. Since then though, the standard has been 8 megapixels on high end smartphones, and both the hardware and software have improved significantly along with the quality of the resulting images and videos. Now it seems that higher pixel resolutions will be making a more regular appearance in new smartphone releases throughout 2012. The Sony Xperia S was recently unveiled and has a 12 megapixel camera among its main features. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is due to be released this year and it is also expected to share a similar camera and it would be a major surprise if the iPhone 5 did not share this credential.

On the iPhone 4S we saw an upgraded 8 megapixel camera which to this day, is widely considered the best camera on a smartphone. Apple seems to have perfected the hardware to get the most out of every pixel. Five lenses and an increased aperture width allow more light to be captured within each pixel, providing outstanding quality for a camera of 8 megapixels. It is hoped and indeed expected by many that this technology will be carried over to a camera of a significantly higher pixel resolution. The iPhone 5 looks as though it may continue Apple’s trend of producing the best camera phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is another major tech release scheduled for 2012, taking the reins from the Galaxy S2 as the company’s new flagship Android smartphone. Like the iPhone 4S is it highly regarded as one of the best 8 megapixel camera phones available. It has been confirmed that a 12 megapixel camera will grace the spec sheet of the Galaxy S3 which also sports the likes of a quad-core processor, a screen resolution similar to that of stablemate the Galaxy Note, and the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. If Samsung is able to make innovations with the camera on their upcoming release, it will be interesting to compare the results with the iPhone 5 to see which has the best camera.

To get a feel for the camera on the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3, the Sony Xperia is a good starting point. This camera is already turning heads thanks firstly to its 12 million pixel count, but also its 1080p video capture, panoramic photo mode (features we can expect of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3), ease of use, and the speed at which it operates thanks to the 1.5 GHz dual-core processor.

If you are a camera phone enthusiast, 2012 looks like it will be a very exciting year. If we see this feature on the likes of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3, it is likely that numerous manufacturers like HTC, LG and Motorola etc will follow suit so there will be plenty of new releases to keep us interested.
