March 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Six months ago, Hurricane Irene caused destruction across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.  It was one of the costliest hurricanes ever to hit that part of the country.  Traveling from its initial landfall at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the hurricane moved north damaging homes and businesses with strong winds, record amounts of rain and widespread flooding.

Since that time, billions of dollars have been spent rebuilding properties damaged by the storm.  Many of these properties had extensive flooding and some were damaged beyond repair.  Some of these structures had not only extensive water damage, but were flooded with water containing sewage and a host of microbial and chemical contaminants.

To test for contaminants that could cause health problems for the building occupants and workers, many people turned to environmental professionals at Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC).  The Delaware-based company helped countless homeowners, businesses and schools test their indoor environments before and after rebuilding.

“We are still getting calls regarding Hurricane Irene,” reported Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants.  “Due to the level of devastation some properties are only now being fixed, while others that were not properly remediated are now causing indoor air quality problems for the building occupants.  A number of these properties were not completely dried and some left wet building materials in place that should have been removed.  The end result is often microbial growth that includes mold and bacteria that can become airborne.”

SEHC recently sponsored a video about Bacteroides, a fecal indicator following flooding events.  It can be seen at:
