March 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Germguard has recently undertaken a study trial within The University of Manchester under Dr Mat Upton, Director of the University of Manchester in Medicine & Molecular Microbiology.

The study was to examin Germguards 8 day residual efficacy against Germs, Bacteria and Viruses within an everyday working environment and the protection of surfaces from bacterial colonisation and growth after having been sprayed with Germguard Antimicrobial Disinfectant Cleaner.

A worktop surface was marked out and cleaned with alcohol to remove any viable bacteria or fungi. The surface was allowed to dry and Germguard was used to treat one half, whilst the other half was left untreated. The bench was then left available for everyday routine use, but not cleaned again for the trial period. The bench received heavy use for 3 days followed by light use.

At daily intervals, a 25cm square area of the work bench was rubbed with a cotton swab dampened in sterile saline, which was applied to a blood agar plate for recovery of most bacteria and fungi.

No bacteria at all were recovered on either day 6 or day 7 from the Germguard treated area of the worktop surface, but a total of 86 bacterial colonies were recovered from the untreated area of the worktop surface over the trial period.

Dr Mat Upton - Director of the University of Manchester in Medicine & Molecular Microbiology.

"It is clear from the data that Germguard has a potent activity against the bacteria tested when it is used to coat a surface. This extends to prevention of bacterial colonisation, growth and biofilm formation."

"The inhibitory activity appears to have a residual nature that lasts for more than 8 days. Such activity may potentially be interesting to those responsible for provision of domestic services in a number of settings, as many cleaning agents or disinfectants do not remain active for any appreciable time following application or drying."

The company took the decision to have Germguards unique antimicrobial, antibacterial eight day protective barrier tested to the maximum within an everyday working environment, even though it had already received the same results in a controlled environment from a British Standards Accredited Laboratory.

“We were delighted when Dr Mat Upton of the University of Manchester confirmed the previous results that we had already achieved in the laboratory, but as we don’t all live and work in a controlled environment, it was entirely appropriate to have Germguard tried and tested in exactly the same environment that most of us live and work in every day of our lives, and so that our customers can be assured of the quality and effectiveness of our products,” said Sean Connors speaking from the company’s Knutsford Headquarters.

He also added, “Although we mainly supply Germguard to businesses and organisations, including Care Homes, Nursing Homes, Caterers, Hotels and Hospitals and some Janitorial Suppliers, recent outbreaks of the Norovirus, has prompted email and telephone enquiries from individuals wanting to purchase Germguard, and in response to those enquiries, we have now made Germguard available to everyone and individuals can make purchases online from our website,”.
