By: BookBuzz.net Yankee Invasion by Ignacio Solares is receiving rave reviews from the media and reviewers. Most recently reviewed by history professor, Linda Wagner, the book received a five star critique. Ignacio Solares has written a riveting tale about the events surrounding the Mexico City invasion during the 1800’s. Written as if part memoir, part discussions, this historical fiction novel captures the essence of the time period, along with the documented facts of the era. The story is told from the perspective of an older Mexican, Abelardo, who outlines the events leading up to and surrounding the American occupation of Mexico city. Very graphic at times, as war always is, the author chooses to be realistic about the events and not hide the gruesome side of war or life. Although a fictional tale, Yankee Invasion captures the trueness of the war, the experience by Mexican soldiers and the effect it had on the lives of those living in Mexico. The reader will get the sense that the author’s view is very anti-American, but during the time period, and still some today, that is the view held by many in Mexico. Readers will encounter strong language, violence, mature themes, and sexuality, but this is a fictional account of one of the worst times in Mexican history and these themes fit the story. The realness would have been lost without them. Although, maybe not for everybody, this is a wonderful read that will be enjoyed by many. History buffs, intellectuals, historical fiction lovers, Mexican-Americans, and general readers will find something to take away from, Yankee Invasion. 5 Stars – Highly Recommended Book Description: Yankee Invasion centers on one of the most traumatic periods of Mexican history, the 1847 invasion of Mexico City by American armed forces and the ultimate loss of almost half its territory to the United States. The story is narrated by a witness to events, Abelardo, who in the novel’s very first pages commits an act of resistance that will haunt him the rest of his life. In his old age he begins to recollect the history of Mexico, as well as his painful love for both his fiancée and her mother, which plays out against the backdrop of the invasion and occupation. Yankee Invasion offers vivid descriptions of the streets, cafés, cantinas, and drawing rooms of Mexico City from the mid-nineteenth century to the turn of the twentieth. Abelardo is an informative yet unreliable narrator, and author Solares successfully combines humor and pathos. Solares thus gives us a very rich tale of history relived, the past as present, the wholeness of experience as an act of the imagination directed not only at the past, but also at the future of the final warrior, the reader.” —Carlos Fuentes, from his introduction “This is a riveting historical novel of the invasion and occupation of Mexico City by US forces during the Mexican War but more important, Yankee Invasion is an unusual, highly original, and most welcome detectivesque testimony of the nightmarish history we don’t seem to be able to wake up from.” —Irene Vilar, author of The Ladies’ Gallery: A Memoir of Family Secrets and Impossible Motherhood “Ignacio Solares has written a superb novel.… Yankee Invasion provides readers with a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with this crucial moment in the shared history of Mexico and the US.” —Arturo Sarukhan, Mexican Ambassador to the United States For more information, review copies, or interviews please contact the Scarletta Press publicity department the author at: Desiree Bussiere Email: desiree@scarlettapress.com Phone: 612-455-0252 Website: www.scarlettapress.com Scarletta Press 10 South 5th Street Suite 1105 Minneapolis, MN 55402 Yankee Invasion is available for purchase online from the publisher, Amazon.com, BN.com and other online retailers.
