Devon Prep Middle School Students Qualify For State Science Olympiad

Students from the Main Line private boys school earned medals and the chance to advance while competing at the regional Science Olympiad.
 
April 21, 2012 - PRLog -- Devon Prep’s Middle School Science Olympiad Team has qualified to compete at the state level at the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad which takes place at Juniata College in late April. Devon Prep’s team earned this distinction by scoring among the top 10 teams in the middle school division at the recent Southeastern PA Science Olympiad Regional competition at Cabrini College.  

The 13 team members include: Eighth Graders Sean Fulmer of Broomall, Scott Clancy of Berwyn, Alexandru Damian of Norristown, Richard O’Flynn of Media and Shyamal Patel of Norristown; Seventh Graders Michael Weir of Malvern, Tyler Keough of Collegeville, Brandon Smoot of West Chester, and Arnold Tiglao of King of Prussia; and Sixth Graders Thomas Brower of Kimberton, James Costello of Bryn Mawr, Christopher Rufo of Chester Springs, and Matthew Siracusa of Newtown Square.

Also at the Southeastern Regional Science Olympiad Devon Prep Eighth Graders Sean Fulmer and Scott Clancy earned third place medals in the “Disease Detectives” event and Twelfth Graders Ryan O’Shea  of King of Prussia and Nathan Stauffer of Berwyn earned Second Place medals in the “Write It, Do It” event.

Thirty-five teams from schools in the five county Philadelphia area competed at the regional Olympiad in such events as Anatomy (Respiratory, Digestive), Crime Busters, Disease Detectives (Food Borne Illness), Dynamic Planet (Earth's Fresh Waters), Experimental Design, Food Science, Meteorology (Climate), Mouse Trap Vehicle, Reach for the Stars, Rocks and Minerals, Water Quality,  Write It Do It and more.  A team may participate in one or all of the events within its division.

Science Olympiad is an international non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of team events. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology. Last year, more than 16,000 elementary and secondary schools nationally participated in Science Olympiad programs.

In Pennsylvania more than 300 teams compete in six regional locations across the state The Pennsylvania Science Olympiad hosts one state tournament. First- and second-place team winners in each of the two divisions at the state tournament will be eligible to compete at the national tournament.

Devon Prep is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six through 12, conducted by the Piarist Fathers.
